About the Event

California History
Come to Life

Mahon Ranch Historic Days is a premier living history event in Northern California — an immersive journey through the people, cultures, and events that forged the Golden State. Across three days, visitors step into the 19th century through authentic encampments, first-person character presentations, and hands-on demonstrations spanning six chapters of California's remarkable story.

From Gold Rush miners and pioneer settlers to railroad laborers, Buffalo Soldiers, early California ranchos, and Civil War-era history — every era is brought alive by dedicated reenactors, historians, and educators on the open land of Mahon Ranch.

"Each day culminates in a thunderous volley of cannon fire — and just as memorable are the Gold Rush miners, pioneer settlers, and living historians who bring California's deeper story to life."

This is not a museum. This is history you can walk through, touch, and talk to.

Six Eras of California History

What You'll Experience

Each era comes to life through dedicated reenactors, living historians, and interactive exhibits. Walk freely between chapters — there is no single path through history.

Chapter I · 1848–1860
⛏ The Gold Rush & California Statehood
The discovery at Sutter's Mill changed California forever. Experience placer mining demonstrations, Gold Rush camp life, and the chaos of the forty-niners who transformed a territory into a state.
Featured: John Sutter · Gold Rush miners · forty-niners · panning demonstrations · miner camp life
Chapter II · 1840s–1870s
🐴 Stagecoach, Trails & Pioneer Migration
Thousands crossed the continent by wagon, stagecoach, and foot — chasing land, opportunity, and a new beginning. Period vehicles, overland trail stories, and pioneer daily life on display.
Featured: Stagecoach & carriage displays · pioneer settlers · overland trail history
Chapter III · 1860s–1869
🚂 Railroads & the Transcontinental Line
Chinese laborers, Irish immigrants, and freed slaves drove iron spikes across the Sierra Nevada to link a continent. The railroad remade California's economy, landscape, and people.
Featured: Railroad labor history · Chinese immigrant pioneers · transcontinental story
Chapter IV · Early California
🌾 Rancho Era & Cultural Roots
Long before statehood, California was shaped by Mexican rancheros, Russian fur traders, Japanese fishermen, and early immigrant communities. Their stories are California's foundation.
Featured: Mexican pioneers · Vallejo era · Russian settlers · Japanese & Chinese Californians
Chapter V · 1860s
🔫 Civil War Era & Buffalo Soldiers
The war that tore the nation apart reached California too. ACWA reenactors and CHAS horse-drawn artillery bring authentic Union and Confederate encampments, battles, and soldier life to the field.
Featured: Lincoln · Harriet Tubman · Sojourner Truth · U.S. Grant · Dr. Mary Walker · Buffalo Soldiers · ACWA · CHAS
Chapter VI · All Eras
🔨 Trades, Crafts & Everyday Life
History is not only war and politics — it is the blacksmith's forge, the washerwoman's basin, and the mercantile store. Hands-on demonstrations bring 19th century craft and daily life into reach.
Featured: Ken Pywell blacksmithing · period crafts · Alaina's Mercantile · swordsmanship · hands-on activities
